Blueheath at The Bower opened its doors to retirees considering their options at a seminar ‘Supersize your downsizing’ featuring Geoff
Whiddon, Principal of Dome Financial, certified financial advisor and retirement specialist. The free seminar was a great opportunity to
learn more about the financial side of downsizing with Geoff talking attendees through changes to superfunds, potential tax benefits, how
to maximise pension entitlements and how village exit fees work.
Geoff recommends that people planning their retirement or considering downsizing should seek an advisor with retirement expertise. “I meet many people who, in hindsight, delayed or made the wrong decision because they weren’t considering the whole picture. Downsizing isn’t a financial decision, it’s a lifestyle choice, and it can offer great value if you’re looking for community living and access to the facilities on offer. There are ways, however, to ensure it brings about the best financial outcome for your situation.”
Geoff understands that many find the enormity of downsizing overwhelming, he continues, “I’ve known clients to put off downsizing and then tackle it at a later stage in life. Sadly, the excitement of the new adventure is tarnished when struggling with health issues or the loss of a partner. That’s why I was keen to be involved today - it’s great to see people come along to events like this.”
Event attendees were extremely positive about the event format and content. David Kelly, the village manager at Blueheath, is keen to offer
further education-style events, “We love sponsoring events like this. We appreciate that financial planning and retirement planning is
complex and it can be hard! It’s great to connect retirees with experts in the field and show people that they may have more options than
they thought.”
